Dr. Clive Lipchin

Dr. Clive Lipchin was born in South Africa and raised in Johannesburg. He received his first degree in applied psychology and zoology with an emphasis on wildlife management on private game farms in South Africa’s Northern Province. Clive immigrated to Israel in 1991 and received a master’s degree in desert ecology from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His master’s thesis examined plant community dynamics in response to soil disturbance by porcupines that are native to Israel’s Negev desert. In 1996, he left Israel to pursue a doctoral degree in resource ecology management at the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. His doctoral thesis examined public perceptions toward water use and scarcity in Israel and the Middle East.
 
While in the US, Clive held consulting positions for the United Nations Development Program on implementing biodiversity protection programs submitted under the Global Environmental Facility as well as on human development policy. He has also held various teaching positions in environmental studies and policy at Long Island University, the Bronx Zoo and the University of Michigan. Before joining the faculty at the Arava Institute he held the position of water policy analyst for the National Wildlife Federation’s Great Lakes Office.
 
As a member of the Arava Institute faculty Clive teaches courses in sustainable development, water management, scientific research methodology and culture and environment interactions. Clive also serves as the director of the Arava Institute’s Center for Environmental Policy and Research where he oversees research projects, workshops and conferences that focus on transboundary environmental problems facing Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. Most recently he has been involved in a regional project on assessing impacts on the declining water level of the Dead Sea. This project was conducted jointly with Palestinian and Jordanian partners and funded by the European Union.
 
Currently, he is part of a research team working on the World Bank sponsored feasibility study of the Red Sea-Dead Sea conduit. He is conducting research on the environmental impact assessment of the proposed project.
 
Clive also serves as senior consultant for Arava Environmental Consulting & Technologies. The for-profit arm of the Arava Institute. He specializes in corporate social environmental responsibility.
