Innovative Wastewater Treatment Facility Opens

PRESS RELEASE

“60 researchers from Europe open the Ketura Valley Constructed Wetlands project, which has ended aquifer pollution.”

On October 25, 2007 at 12:30 PM, the innovative pilot project for treating sewage by the Constructed Wetlands method will officially open. The Ketura Valley Constructed Wetlands site consists of 5 pools, planted with a diverse assortment of water plants. The municipal and agricultural sewage of Kibbutz Neot Smadar and Neve Harif flow through the pools, with the plants and the microorganisms surrounding their roots purifying the water, thereby enabling it to be reused for irrigation.

60 researchers from European academic-research institutions will be participating at the opening ceremony. They are touring the site as part of the COST 859 “Phytotechnologies to promote sustainable land use and improve food safety” workshop on 'Nutrient Biofortification and Exclusion of Pollutants in Food Plants’ taking place at Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Ben Gurion University of the Negev.

The completion of the Constructed Wetlands has ended the sewage disposal pollution of the ground, aquifer and wadi, by the creation of a wetlands ecosystem. The extensive project was funded by the EU LIFE Fund for the Environment.
