Master's Program

Research Opportunities for Graduate Students

Two premier educational centers from the South of Israel, each with their unique institutional orientations and faculties, have come together to create a special Masters program:

The Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, situated at the Sede Boqer campus of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, is a world-renowned center for the study of desert biodiversity, evolutionary and physiological ecology, as well as population, community, and landscape ecology.

The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, on Kibbutz Ketura, has emerged as an innovative teaching and research center, with a focus on regional Middle Eastern environmental challenges. These include issues of policy, sustainable agriculture and social and cultural concerns.

Students with a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in Israel or abroad, who are interested in pursuing careers in nature conservation, environmental protection, regulation, planning, environmental and ecological policy or in other environmental issues, are invited to apply to the Masters program. This is a program of the Albert Katz International School for Desert Studies at the Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies at Kibbutz Ketura.

Students spend one year at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) and one year at AKIS. The completed degree is in Desert Studies with a concentration in Environmental Studies from AKIS. Faculties from the AIES and from the research departments of the Blaustein Institute for Desert Research serve as advisors. Eligibility depends on academic merit, background and the availability of funds.
