Description

The aim of the course is to study the attitude of the desert's past societies towards their environment, and the nature of utilizing it. We will examine the environmental conditions of the southern Arava and the Éclat region, which discouraged and encouraged living here. The course will address material and spiritual culture. We will study animal husbandry and agriculture in the desert (6th to 3rd millennia B.C.), the emergence of metallurgy (5th to 2nd millennia B.C.) as well as various types of cult and burials sites, to provide clues for the role of philosophical and religious ideas in the formation of the ancients’ attitude toward the environment. Ancient written sources, slide presentations, and field trips are integral to the course.
