Description
This course will introduce the major issues of water management in the Middle East. Water scarcity is a reality in the Middle East and thus it is critical to explore the ways and means of sustainably managing this resource. The course will concentrate on specific case studies that illustrate the multifaceted reality of water resource management in the region. The goal of this course is to provide an interdisciplinary approach toward water management. The course includes field study trips and invited guest speakers that represent the broad spectrum of issues and professionals working in the field of water management and conservation. Field study trips to the Jordan River Watershed and the Mediterranean coastal region highlight issues ranging from recharge areas to control of urban pollution, distribution and collection systems in a region of scarcity. A group student project on community water consumption and management in the Arava will be carried out during the semester. The goal of the project is to highlight the importance of investigating how people use water and how this information can be used in management decisions on the sustainable use of water.Required Reading: Provided during the course
