Assessment of Species Diversity in the Southern Arava Rift Valley

Overview

This project aimed to compile a comprehensive inventory of flora and fauna in the Southern Arava region. GIS maps established a baseline for an empirical basis for strategic planning for the future development in the region in Jordan and Israel. The specific objectives of the research project were:

  • To assess the distribution and frequency of species along the Arava Rift Valley and salient trends in the area's bio-diversity;
  • To evaluate the impact of agriculture and other development initiatives on bio-diversity; and
  • To prioritize the areas of land in Jordan and Israel along the Arava Rift Valley that have unique ecological value in order to design a coherent bi-national preservation strategy.

The research team collected information and mapped the area in order to distinguish between all different landscape units within the valley.
